Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to provide a descriptive catalogue of “Jesuit” and ornamental rings from Seneca-Iroquois archæological sites in western New York state. Included is a chronological account of the occurrence of ring types and decorative characteristics within the geographical area from which they were obtained.

Chronology is based on suggestions from Charles F. Wray. Adjustments have been made to include information that has become available since the publication in 1953 of the article “A Preliminary Report on the Seneca Sequence in Western New York, 1550–1687” (Wray and Schoff 1953: 53–63). The overall chronological period involves the range from approximately 1625 to the early decades of the 19th century.

“Jesuit” rings are defined as non-ferrous, usually brass rings with decorations inspired by religious subjects. Ornamental rings are the plain, stamped, or incised non-ferrous rings, with or without insets which are secular in decorative inspiration.
