Abstract

The reaction hot pressing at 1750°C of compositions corresponding to pure β′-sialons, Si6−zAlzOzN8−z with z-values 1.0 to 2.0, has been studied. The liquid phase, present in the system at the beginning of the process, was found to disappear completely during the heating-up period of the hot-pressing run. During the presence of transient liquid the particle rearrangement process was the main densification mechanism. After reaching the hot-pressing temperature and removal of the liquid phase, the grain-boundary sliding is thought to be the densification mechanism and phase transformation is probably controlled by vapour transport.
