Abstract
Background
Allergic diseases are a relevant public health problem. Until now no evidence-based recommendations of allergy prevention exist. An evidence-based guideline of primary and secondary prevention of allergies was developed by the “Aktionsbündnis Allergieprävention (abap)”.
Methods
After the search strategy had been developed, literature was searched in electronic databases, in selected journals, in the reference lists of review articles, and in the so-called gray literature. Inapplicable studies and studies on therapy and medication were excluded. The relevant literature was evaluated with SIGN checklists and levels of evidence were assigned accordingly.
Results
After all 323 studies were included and evaluated for the guideline. An outstanding amount of evidence was found concerning the issues breast feeding, smoking, and the effect of hypoallergenic formula.
Conclusion
This examination of evidence levels allows a derivative of differentiated recommandations for allergy prevention.
