Abstract
The injection process using calcium carbide based mixtures as a desulfurlzing agent is safe and economical.

Walter H. Meichsner is a member of the Research Dept. of August Thyssen-Hiitte A.G., Duisburg, West Germany. He received a Met. E. degree from the Technical Univ. of Santiago, Chile, subsequently joining ATH in 1965, where he has worked on applied research problems related to steelmaking, billet reheating and on development of metallurgical processes. Since 1969 he is engaged in developing and perfecting the injection process described in the paper.
Karl H. Peters is superintendent Blast Furnaces, Hamborn Works of August Thyssen-Hiitte AG. in Duisburg, West Germany. He holds his Diploma in iron and steel metallurgy from Technische Uni-versitaet Clausthal (1953) and joined Hamborn Blast Furnace Works as an assistant in 1953. He became chief engineer in 1968 and was promoted into his current position in 1972.
Wolfgang Ullrich is Research Manager, Steelmaking Processes, of August Thyssen-Hutte AG. He holds his Diploma in Chemical Engineering from Gottingen (1954) and a doctorate degree from Technische Universitaet Clausthal (1963). After 5 years of chemical laboratory experience at Metall-huttenwerke Liibeck he joined ATH in 1960.
Herbert A. Knahl is Chief Metallurgist at Sueddeutsche Kalkstickstoff-Werke AG., Trostberg, West Germany. He received a Diploma (1959) and a Doctorate degree in Physical Metallurgy (1963) fromTech-nische Universitaet Clausthial (West Germany). He is with SKW since 1964.
