Sir Raymond Brookes was apprenticed as an engineer in 1923 and has spent his entire career in the drop forging/engineering industry, with close connections to the automotive industry. In 1941 he joined the GKN Group as joint general manager of Garringtons, Ltd., where he was closely associated with the expansion of the company’s Darlaston plant and the establishment of the Bromsgrove factory. Sir Raymond became managing director and chairman of Garringtons, and chairman of Joseph Sankey & Sons Ltd. In 1953 he was appointed to the board of Guest Keen & Nettlefolds, Ltd., becoming deputy group managing director in 1963 and group managing director in 1964. He took up his present post of chairman and chief executive officer in August 1965. Among his many appointments Sir Raymond was a part-time member of the board of the British Steel Corp., 1967–68, and a member of the British National Export Council, 1969–70. He has been a member of the Council, Confederation of British Industry, since 1968. Sir Raymond was knighted in 1971.
