-
(a)
Summary
Recent theoretical developments and empirical results in basic research suggest the assumption that self-control demands represent a significant source of stress at work. Initial findings in work settings revealed that self-control demands were positively related to indicators of job strain. However, evidence is lacking so far whether self-control demands exert unique influences on job strain. Consequently, in the present study different forms of self-control demands (impulse control, resisting distractions, overcoming inner resistances) were investigated in combination with a traditional measure of work stress (time pressure, task complexity) which is known for a long time as influencing strain. Data from 437 staff members of a sickness insurance fund showed that
-
(a)
the measured forms of self-control demands jointly contributed significant portions of incremental variance to the prediction of various measures of job strain, and
-
(b)
that each form of self-control demands exerted some unique influences on job strain.
-
(a)
