Riassunto
L’Antropometria ha un ruolo di primaria importanza nella valutazione cli nica e nella standardizzazione del rischio metabolico associato a sovrappeso e obesità. Classicamente si distinguono indicatori antropometrici genericamente ponderali, quali peso corporeo e BMI, e indicatori più specifici di composizione corporea, di adiposità e distrettualità del grasso corporeo. In realtà esiste ampia sovrapposizione tra questi indicatori, in particolare per quelli relativi alla massa adiposa, totale e/o distrettuale. Per quanto riguarda la composizione corporea, questa sovrapposizione non dovrebbe costituire motivo per operare una scelta preferenziale degli uni verso gli altri, bensì un loro uso sinergico. Se accuratamente utilizzati, sia gli indicatori di adiposità totale che quelli di adiposità distrettuale possono fornire informazioni utili anche nel follow-up del paziente obeso. Bilancia e statimetro sono strumenti essenziali sia per lo specialista che per il medico di medicina generale, così come lo è una cordella metrica. Nella pratica clinica, così come negli studi clinici ed epidemiologici, anche la pur apparentemente semplice antropometria merita adeguato training per essere affidabile.
