Abstract

In this paper I want to appreciate the life and work of Hans Freudenthai, one of the outstanding mathematicians and mathematics educators of this century, and try to pay special tribute to his contributions to the theory and practice of mathematics education. In surveying his key ideas I make a plea for a more in-depth reception and analysis of his approaches with us, in particular for a study of his conception of a ‘Mathematics for all and everybody’, which was successfully concretizised by hirn and his team in Utrecht at the now named Freudenthal-Institute, and which is aIready to a far extent applied to school practice in his new horne country, The Netherlands.
