Abstract
In mathematics education the importance of research into children’s thinking and learning processes is undisputed. Results of this kind of research, however, are only available for a few areas of primary school mathematics. The central concern of this article is the analysis of the mental arithmetic skills of pupils solving addition and subtraction problems involving two-digit numbers. Since the children were assessed at the beginning, middle and end of their second year, it has been possible to record both their previous knowledge and the development of their ways of thinking and learning.
