Abstract
The development of the fraction concept and related arithmetic operations are investigated at the beginning of lower secondary level. A combination of quantitative and qualitative studies is carried out to gain empirical results concerning students’ approaches towards common fractions. Task analyses identify students’ typical misconceptions concerning core topics, while half-structured interviews reveal the sources of these misconceptions. Difficulties result foremost from insufficient mental models (Grundvorstellungen): typical mistakes can be explained by either missing mental models or an inappropriate expansion of old mental models.
