Abstract
Concrete activities involving appropriate materials are held to be at the origin of the mental operations which ultimately make it possible for children to carry out mental calculations. Video protocols and eye movement recordings are analysed to establish how second graders use the one-hundred-dot-field while solving addition and subtraction tasks. The data analysis shows that most high achievers do not use (or no longer use) the material. Low achievers, on the contrary, use it in a way which turns out not to be helpful to them: their activities are either inappropriate or are unilaterally subordinated to the counting-all strategy. As a result, their spontaneous concrete activities do not lead to operative strategies capable of facilitating mental calculation.
