Abstract
Our rationals for dealing with black boxes in mathematical education are
-
*
Impressions from several discussions about computers and computeralgebrasystems (DERIVE, MATHEMATICA,…) in mathematics classrooms, in which different views on this theme (black boxes) are an important background
-
*
The importance of black boxes as a medium for the transfer of knowledge from universities into society: they are part of the basic structure of our society (the “technological formation”)
-
*
The legitimation crisis of teaching mathematics, expressed by politicians who ask: “Why do we need so much mathematics education in a time, when computers solve all mathematical problems?”
Our central thesis is that a new point of view on dealing with black boxes and teaching to analyse them in mathematics classroom opens new ways to solve problems in these areas.
