Abstract

It is well known, that pupils have difficulties in calculating with zero. Motivated by a thirteen-year-old girl, who spontaneonsly developed an instructive concept of zero, this paper investigates, why pupils feel zero to be a mysterious number and why many of them do not accept zero as a proper number at all. Results of informal interviews with pupils show, that the ambiguous character of zero as “something for nothing” is responsible for most of the difficulties.
