Summary
This study determined whether or not rapid solidification changed the normal carbide precipitation sequence, size, and distribution in the 6.35-cm casting and 1.25-cm hot rolled bar of M7 high-speed steel. The as-cast structure was uniform and contained the typical phases of M7 ingot casting. Elemental segregation appeared to be improved by rapid solidification. Subsequent hot rolling at a 25 to 1 reduction produced a very uniform distribution of fine carbides. The work employs a variety of computer-assisted analytical techniques.
