Summary

A carbonaceous seam mix applicable at room temperature was developed for the seams between carbon blocks of Hall smelting cell bottoms. It consists of calcined anthracite, coke-oven pitch, and a small amount of solvent. When applied at temperatures below 60°C, the evolution of fumes is sharply reduced, compared with hot mixes used previously. Three other applications for the mix in metallurgical vessels have since been developed: monolithic lining for Hall smelting cells, lining for the ferrosilicon ladles in the Magnetherm Process for producing magnesium, and for supporting the graphite electrodes in Acheson furnaces for silicon carbide manufacture.
