Abstract
The impact of both ecological and genetic factors on a micro-population of neem from alkaline-well-irrigated and neutral-dry regions influence the variability in the levels of the potent biopesticide azadirachtin-A that was extracted from their seed kernels. This tetranorterpeniod ranged from 0.83 to 2.2 mg g-1 seed as estimated by HPLC. The total azadirachtin-A ranged from 17.78 to 62.67 mg per 100 seeds. DNA fingerprinting using Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and Inter Sequence Specific Repeats (ISSR) primers categorized these trees into two main groups which was congruous to their varied habitats and also their azadirachtin-A content. Furthermore, this molecular analysis served as a tool for the rapid identification of high azadirachtin-A yielding neem trees that would in turn serve in the selection of elite varieties for commercial purposes.
