Abstract

H ealthcare expenditure as a proportion of gross domestic product (GDP) continues to increase in the US, Europe and Japan for a number of reasons. Government initiatives to contain healthcare spending, and the implications for the pharmaceutical industry, were the focus of a seminar organised by Management Forum entitled ‘Cost containment and its impact’ [ London, UK; Jun 1994 ].
