Abstract
A number of academic detailing, or educational outreach, programmes have been implemented in different countries over the past 10 years in an attempt to improve both the quality and cost effectiveness of prescribing practices. 1 At the 13th International Conference on Pharmacoepidemiology [ Lake Buena Vista, US; August 1997 ], researchers presented details of several such programmes that are currently underway in Europe, the UK, Australia and Indonesia. According to Dr Stephen Chapman from the University of Keele, UK, academic detailing will not have a positive future unless the major objective of such programmes is health gain for the patient rather than cost containment; only then will academic detailers ‘ engage the hearts and minds ’ of prescribers.
