Abstract
I n a time of increasing challenges in healthcare provision, the application of outcomes research and pharmacoeconomics can help pharmacists make more informed and complete healthcare decisions. Different strategies on where and how to incorporate outcomes research theory into practice were a recurring theme discussed by several speakers during 2 sessions * at the American Society for Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) annual meeting [ Baltimore, US; June 1998 ]. Dr Lisa Sanchez, president of PE Applications Inc. in Boston, US, described a real-world example of how outcomes research has been used to develop guidelines to promote the cost-effective use of antiemetic drugs for inpatients with cancer.
Additional information
* The 2 sessions were a Glaxo Wellcome-sponsored symposium and a general ASHP session entitled ‘Outcomes research: survival skills for pharmacists’.
