Abstract

D isease management is not a simple approach to healthcare. To make disease management pay off, there needs to be a large investment in gathering the evidence that will convince physicians to alter their practice. Dr Susan Horn from the Institute for Clinical Outcomes Research in Utah, US, shared her vision of how disease management can lead to substantial cost savings at The Disease Management Conference [ San Francisco, US; January 1997 ]. In particular, Dr Horn emphasised the need to adopt a broad perspective, rather than focusing on just one or two components of the process of care.
