Abstract
This article summarizes the presentation of the Thomas Medal Lecture 2004 held in Osaka with some additional later information on the international standardization works. The author introduces the international standardization works on resistance welding by IIW Commission III for the last twenty years and procedures for developing a new international standard with and without patent rights according to the ISO/IEC Directives and the requirements by the IIW SC-STAND.
