Abstract

In this paper, a detailed evaluation is presented on the IIW joint working group on residual stress and distortion prediction X/XV JWG RSDP phase 1 numerical results on pipe girth welds. A series of finite element analyses were performed to illustrate how the large discrepancies seen in the residual stress predictions resulted from the round-robin phase I. This includes both problem definitions and implementation of numerical procedures, as well as proper interpretation of predicted residual stress results. Finally, lessons learned from RSDP phase I round-robin results and recommendations for performing residual stress estimate are summarised.
