Summary

The bacterial regrowth-inhibition effects (previously known as bacterial regrowth-inhibiting activity) of cefmetazole (CMZ; a β-lactam) and/or netilmicin (NTL; an aminoglycoside) were investigated in bacteria identified from the puerperal uterine cavity. CMZ, NTL or CMZ plus NTL were administered to 12 puerperae and the effective regrowth time (i.e. time required to return to pretreatment bacterial counts) was examined.

In Gram-positive cocci (with the exception of Staphylococcus spp.), the bacterial regrowth-inhibition effect of CMZ appeared to be similar to that of NTL, while in Gram-negative bacilli, this effect was considerably higher with NTL than with CMZ. In anaerobic bacteria, the bacterial regrowth-inhibition effect of CMZ against Peptostreptococcus spp. and Bacteroides spp. was observed.

The combination of CMZ and NTL extended the antibacterial spectrum. It did not, however, affect the bacterial regrowth-inhibition effect.
