Nebivolol Improves the Vessel Wall Properties of the Common Carotid Artery

Summary

The effect of nebivolol on compliance of the common carotid artery was studied noninvasively in hypertensive patients. Nebivolol decreased blood pressure and heart rate. Vessel wall properties (distensibility and compliance) of the common carotid artery increased significantly during nebivolol treatment, while the diameter remained unchanged. This favourable influence of nebivolol on the vessel wall properties of the common carotid artery (and possibly on other large arteries) might protect these vessels from atherosclerosis. The effect of other β-adrenoceptor antagonists on large arteries is discussed.
