Abstract

During oxidation of a metal sample in air, the new oxide could, in principle, form at the oxide/oxide interface, the oxide/oxide grain boundaries, the oxide/metal interface or the metal/metal grain boundaries. This paper discusses the diffusional properties of the various interfaces and boundaries and proposes mechanisms for the inhibition of the oxidation reaction by second phase particles.

Additional information

Editor’s Note: In September 1986, TMS, The American Ceramics Society, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the Perkin-Elmer Corporation and JEOL, U.S.A., cosponsored the international symposium Interface Effects on the Processing and Properties of Materials for High Temperature Service at Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The conference was the 1986 Southeast Regional Meeting for TMS and was organized by C.L. White, M.H. Yoo and A. Bleier of Oak Ridge National Laboratories (ORNL). The conference covered a variety of topics related to structure-property relationships, interface characterization and failure mechanisms. The following paper from that meeting has been adapted to complement the technical emphasis of this month’s Journal of Metals.
