Abstract
Although more than 40 years have elapsed since the Porsche flat-six engine first appeared, its advantages — including compact dimensions, the low centre of gravity resulting from the horizontal cylinder layout, and the complete balancing out of free forces and 1st and 2nd order moments of inertia — predestine this engine like no other for use in the Porsche 911.
