Abstract
For decades, production motorcycles from Harley-Davidson had been driven by air-cooled two-valve pushrod engines. Then, the company from Milwaukee decided to launch a totally new vehicle with a completely new, water-cooled 60-degree two-cylinder four-valve engine based on the existing VR 1000 racing engine. This article describes in particular the design of the new drive train (engine, clutch and transmission), which was developed by Harley-Davidson Co, Milwaukee, in collaboration with Porsche AG, Stuttgart, and is being produced in Kansas City/USA in a joint venture between the two companies.
