Abstract

Turbocharging of gasoline and diesel engines plays an important part for downsizing to reduce CO2 emissions at a given engine power. As a part of Freudenberg, Burgmann Automotive has developed a gas-lubricated face seal for exhaust-gas turbochargers. This replaces the traditional sealing “piston ring”, as a non-contact, self-regulating sealing gap and pumps against the oil pressure and eliminates oil leckage. Thanks to the new seal, turbochargers do not have to be installed horizontally. Using the same functional principle, Burgmann Automotive in collaboration with Volkswagen developed a gas-lubricated sealing for crankshafts.
