Abstract
A combined application of both strain gauge measurements during real engine operation and FEM calculations has proved to be a reliable method in order to perform well aimed investigations on critical engine components in terms of specific working loads. Subsequently, measures for an optimisation can be defined. In this article by IFT Ingenieurgesellschaft für Fahrzeugtechnik, Schwäbisch Gmünd, Germany, essential steps for a mechanical load analysis using the example of a cylinder head are presented.
