A downwards weight spiral

Abstract

Over the past six years, it has been possible to achieve a significant downwards spiral in the average weight of axle springs by introducing new processing methods and increasing the strength of the spring steels used. Furthermore, it has been possible to translate the associated savings in material into cost savings. Today, however, development work has reached a point where further significant reductions in weight can only be achieved by using alternative materials. The titanium alloys used widely in motor sport are particularly interesting in this connection. Consequently, the technological potential of titanium and its suitability for use in series production was to be demonstrated as part of the development of the Lupo FSI. This work led to the world’s first use of a titanium axle spring in a series production vehicle.
