Wireless in-car communication with Bluetooth

Abstract

The passenger car of the future will contain driver assistance and infotainment systems that interact closely together. The necessary exchange of information between all systems is made possible only by a unique and standardized interface. One key technology that allows this complex interaction to take place wirelessly is the so-called Bluetooth technology. This article outlines the possibilities of Bluetooth systems for cars. After an introduction to the technical characteristics of Bluetooth, new applications are proposed for the passenger compartment that are only possible using this radio channel. As it is true for any wire less communication, different phenomena can affect the wave propagation and, hence, the quelity of the communication. In order to investigate these phenomena, a large number of measurements of the radio channel were carried out by the Institut für Höchstfrequenztechnik und Elektronik (IHE) of the University of Karlsruhe (TH).
