Abstract
EADS Innovation Works and SGL Kümpers have developed a highly automated and low-cost production process for carbon fibre composite aircraft fuselage frames as part of their “Braided Frames (BraF)” project. The textile manufacturing process allows the production of complex frame geometries with varying cross-sections and radii. Carbon fibres are directly processed from the bobbin, thus largely avoiding the need for expensive textile semi-finished products. The high level of automation ensures good reproducibility and fulfils the quality requirements of the aviation industry with low costs.
