Das Stichwort „Leichtbau“ weckt selbst bei Fachleuten oft zunächst die Vorstellung von Konstruktionen aus exotischen Materialien niedriger Dichte wie Faserverbundwerkstoffen, Hochleistungskunststoffen oder Titan. Erhebliches Potenzial zur Gewichtseinsparung findet sich jedoch auch in den eher „klassischen“ Einsatzbereichen konventioneller Werkstoffe wie Stahl oder Aluminium. Dabei spielt die konsequente Nutzung der Vorteile des Massivumformprozesses oft eine wesentliche Rolle.

Abstract

Even among experts, the term “lightweight design” initially arouses the idea of designs made of exotic materials with a low density, such as fibre composites, highperformance plastics or titanium. However, considerable potential for saving weight can also be found in the more “classical” applications of conventional materials such as steel or aluminium. In such cases, a key role is often played by consistently using the advantages of the forging process.
