Abstract
Gold coatings have previously been explored as diffusion barriers to protect chromium alloys against nitridation, and substrate metals against hydrogen embrittlement during electroplating. It has now been demonstrated that they are effective as barriers against carburisation of steel. Moreover, considerable insight into their mode of action has been obtained.
