Summary
The regular sequences of strongly enhancedM1 γ-ray transitions, that have been discovered in near-spherical neutron-deficient Pb isotopes, are caused by quantal rotation of anisotropic arrangements of nucleonic currents. This represents a new mode of nuclear excitation which has been calledMagnetic Rotation. The properties of the magnetic-rotational bands are discussed. The experimental proof for their configuration, the angular momentum coupling scheme and its development along the bands is presented.
