Frank Riessman, senior fellow at the Urban Studies Center of Rutgers University, is the author of a recent book,The Culturally Deprived Child. His article is taken from a chapter to appear in the forthcoming book,Mental Health of the Poor, edited by Hiessman, Cohen, and Pearl. It is based upon his work as consulting psychologist for Mobilization for Youth in New York City and visiting professor of psychiatry at Columbia University.
