Gerald Handel was research associa te and instructor in the Committee on Human Development at the University of Chicago from 1952 to 1956. Since then he has been on the staff of Social Research Inc., where he is now assistant director. He is the coauthor of two books,Family World andWorkingman’s Wife, and is currently engaged in writing another on persistence and change in working class life style.

Lee Rainwater is associate professor of sociology at Washington University, having recently left Social Research Inc. in Chicago. He is co-author ofWorkingman’s Wife, The Professional Scientist, and the forthcomingSocial Class, Family Planning and Family Limitation.
