David G. Mandelbaum is professor of anthropology and chairman of the center for South Asia Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. He is completing a book on the systems of society in India, and has written on the development of religion, a comparative view of hostility and aggression, and on modernization. This article is a condensed version of a paper presented to the American Anthropological Society in 1966.
