Abstract

Painful medical procedures are often a source of anxiety for chronically ill children faced with frequent hospitalizations. Hospitals have developed preparation for surgery programs, but little has been done to provide children and their parents, faced with recurrent painful invasive procedures, with methods of making these experiences more tolerable.

Psychological techniques that are relatively easy to teach children and their parents include: breathing or blowing methods, distraction using pop-up books, and the more sophisticated hypnotic imaginative involvement techniques. These are described and case examples from the research documentation are provided.
