Abstract

A Spanish terminology for Dunham’s carbonate rock classification is here reproduced for the Spanish-speaking geological community, in order to avoid the usage of anglicisms or English words in Spanish communication. It has been used in Venezuela and formally proposed at the Sixth Latin American Geological Congress held in Bogotá, Colombia in October 1985.

The following terms are found to best fit the sense of Dunham’s classification, and can be easily and conveniently accepted by people working on carbonates: Calcilodolitas for “mudstones”, Calizas Lodosas for “wackestones”, Calizas Granulares for “grainstones”, Calizaslodogranulares for “packstones”, and Calizas Cristalinas for “crystalline carbonates”. The usage of the name Biolitita is proposed for “boundstones”.

Editor’s Note: In volume 1 of this journal Prof. Nicholas G. Muñoz J. published a letter to the Editor recommending a Spanish terminology for Dunham’s carbonate rock classification. In this current paper this classification is introduced. Since its message is to the Spanish-speaking geological community I asked Professor Muñoz to write this paper in Spanish.
