Abstract
This article adresses the problem of choosing appropriate instruments for evaluating deficient cognitive functioning in the context of individual psychological assessments. It is argued that the main purpose of such an investigation is to help solving the problems encountered by the individual, thus the choice and the application of the instrument should not be primarily determined by scientific, methodological or epistemological considerations. Four prototypes of instruments testing cognitive functions are discussed in terms of scientific qualities, underlying assumptions concerning the nature of intelligence and the professional’s role and expected attitude during the assessment. The usefulness of each prototype for obtaining information relevant intervention strategies is examples of descriptive data recorded while administering to young mentally handicapped children an instrument based on Piaget’s descriptions and interpretations of early developmental acquisitions are presented. They illustrate how numeric test results can and should be supplemented — in a way which is directly useful for educational intervention — by a qualitative analysis of behavior patterns indicative of cognitive functioning.
