Abstract
Based on her long experience, her work, and the testimonies of two Paris teachers, the author shows the progress of young children, as they very gradually enter into the written word through the three sections of the école maternelle. She describes the ‘stealthy’ approach of the ‘little ones’, succeeded by the deep curiosity for the diversity of forms and the variety of written props of the ‘middle section’ (four to five year olds). A correspondence begins to be established between what is said and what is written. It is then, by ingenious, creative and playful means, that the older children (five and six year olds) perceive written and printed signs and what they mean, so that they search for meaning in words and in increasingly complex texts.
