1^st period up to 1940: First articles on Fe and Al alloys end of 19^th century; inter-war time: main focus on X-rays in materials science and testing — 2^nd period up to 1970: emphasis on steels, cast iron, metallography, materials testing, metal physics (plasticity, dislocations); contributions of the Austrian iron and steel industry — 3^rd period up to now: total steel field, variety of materials (Al, Ti, memory alloys, Ni base alloys, composite and implantation materials, amorphous metals, nanostructured materials, high-performance ceramics); questioning and processes (solidification, transformation behaviour, recrystallization, fracture mechanics, service life prediction, modelling and simulation).
