Summary
In 97 volunteers with uric acid concentrations in serum of ≤ 6.9 mg/dl the concentration (mean ± SD) of uric acid in tear fluid was 1.7 ± 0.8 mg/dl. In 36 persons with elevated serum uric acid concentrations (≥ 7.0 mg/dl) the uric acid values (mean ± SD) in tears were 2.3 ±1.0 mg/dl. The uric acid concentration in both groups is significantly different (p = 0.003). There is also a significant correlation between uric acid content in tear fluid and serum. Uric acid has been suggested to be an important antioxidant. The concentrations measured in tear fluid lead to the conclusion that uric acid may contribute in part to the antioxidative status of tear fluid.
