Summary
The use of the Topographic Scanning system TopSS allows us to image the retina in three dimensions. This new method of macular investigation is demonstrated in 4 cases of full-thickness macular holes before and after vitrectomy.
Using the software for optic disc investigation, we found the parameters total area (mean 1.089 mm2), maximum depth (mean 0.443 mm) and also average area depth (mean 0.179 mm) to be suitable for the examination of the macular holes.
After surgery the visual acuity improved in three cases and stayed stable in one case.
This method of charting the area and the depth of macular holes before and after surgery allows us an exact documentation and perhaps later also to draw prognostic conclusions from this data.
