Summary

We examined 20 asymptomatic active amateur boxers. Beside a detailed anamnesis we performed a complete ophthalmologic examination including the peripheral retina in mydriasis. 15 (75%) boxer revealed residuals of ocular contusion, 70% affecting the posterior segment of the eye. In 6 (30%) peripheral retinal tears or atrophic holes were found. In cases with lesions of the anterior segment in 85% the posterior was also affected. Despite the safety measures just as head-guards and special boxing-gloves we recommend periodical ophthalmologic examinations with emphasis on the peripheral retina.
