Abstract

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources have initiated a multidisciplinary wetland research program. Fields of investigation include vegetation, geology, hydrology, biogeochemistry, floristics and fauna. The program arose because very little is known about wetlands in the central Appalachian region which, in turn, frustrated personnel responsible for the section 404 permit review procedure.

Objectives of the program are: (1) to classify all known wetlands in West Virginia, (2) to understand how a wetland ecosystem functions, (3) to develop procedures for assessing the value of a wetland, and (4) to formulate a document based on research findings for use in wetland related permit reviews.

The program will culminate with a symposium in May, 1982 covering both the scientific and technical aspects of the research.
