Anharmonic resonance in the C−O stretch band of cyclopentanone

Abstract

Quantitative aspects of the anharmonic vibrational resonance of triatomic molecules are extended by analogy to large polyatomic systems. They indicate that such resonances are not likely to occur sufficiently commonly to invalidate the use of simplified quadratic selective valence force fields in the normal coordinate analysis of complex polyatomic molecules of low symmetry.

A classic example of such resonance in large molecules is the C=O stretch doublet of cyclopentanone. The considerations noted above suggest that this resonance involves combination bands rather than overtones. New Raman measurements and low temperature solid state measurements indicate that in cyclopentanone the resonance is complex and probably involves two combination bands. Weaker resonance is also demonstrated inαααα′-d4-cyclo-pentanone; tentative assignments are made.
