Abstract
The drift of an ion packet of finite thickness in a constant electric field was calculated for various initial field-direction density distributions. Detailed calculation on constant and Gaussian field-direction distributions were performed. The ion flux distributions resulting from the calculations have been compared with the measurement results obtained by drift tube experiments; the figures show a fair agreement. Fitting side-by-side the flux distributions resulting from theoretical calculations and the measured results the drift velocity, mobility, diffusion and the ion-molecule reaction parameter by drift tube experiments can be calculated.
