Abstract
Since the birth of microelectronics which took place with the invention of the integrated circuits 40 years ago we have been able to watch its unbroken development. Today’s microelectronic circuits can contain millions of devices. This fact makes it possible that completely new electronic systems can be produced for a reasonable price. The evolution of microelectronics will remain unbroken for the next 10 years, which is beyond all imagination. Nevertheless we have to accept major challenges and find solutions for associated problems. New affordable scenarios for research and development have to be found. New techniques for metrology and testing have to be developed. Circuits will operate on signals in the Gigahertz-frequency range. New material will be used. New concepts for interconnects of integrated elements have to be found. Furthermore new inexpensive and effective methods to transfer complex structures of less than 100 nm feature size will be required. We are going to live in an exciting time.
